MWC08: Microsoft takes MSN Direct from your watch to your phone

I thoroughly enjoy using my T-Mobile Shadow Windows Mobile Smartphone and am also a bit of a fan of the MSN Direct SPOT watches. Microsoft announced a new service and application for Windows Mobile Smartphones (Standard, non-touch screen devices) that is available now for free as a Technology Preview. MSN Direct for Windows Mobile is available now for your compatible device. It does not work on Windows Mobile Professional (touch screen) devices.

MSN Direct for Windows Mobile brings you several of the feeds found in the MSN Direct watches, but since the data is being sent over the wireless networks and not over the same FM radio frequency that is used to send data to the watches there are some differences. You will be able to get news stories, weather updates, stock quotes, and sports news sent to you without any interaction necessary on your part.

Power pole knocked down after crash

A crash at Old St. Augustine Road and Pine View Drive knocked out a power pole, but no one was seriously injured.

The intersection was blocked off for several hours after the 3 a.m. crash so the power pole could be repaired, but it is now open, said Lt. Ken Bergstrom, of the Tallahassee Police Department.

Dork Talk

In recent weeks I have banged on about Open Source, expending two articles on Firefox alone. Open Source applications make their code available to everyone. Disagreements and rabid balkanisation within the Open Source community aside, for our purposes the term might as well refer to free software whose licence allows you to share the source code, alter it, use it, do with it what you will.

The two great pillars of Open Source are the GNU project and Linux. I shan't burden you with too much detail, I'll just make the outrageous claim that your computer will be running some descendant of those two within the next five years and that your life will be better and happier as a result.

I am writing this article on a kind of mini John the Baptist, a system that prepares the way of the software saviour whose coming will deliver the 90% of world computer users who suffer under Windows from the expensive, clumsy, costly, ugly, pricey toils of Microsoft.

An eco-friendly inn in Madison

No one turned down the turkey bacon, but I had reservations about the orange juice, which tasted like Tang. Every evening, there's a fresh baked pie put out for guests.

Breakfast is the only time the inn's spell of seclusion is broken. Although there are individual tables, we inevitably ended up at a table with the woman reading "Germs, Guns and Steel" and she wanted to talk all about it.

The inn also offers complimentary drinks each evening, but we declined the margaritas and chips. In the adjoining building, guests have free run of the kitchen for beverages (coffee, tea, soda), which is delightful for insomniacs like me. I checked my e-mail late at night on a free inn computer, then retired to the common area to read by the fireplace.

AREA: The inn is located in the Dudgeon-Monroe neighborhood, which is full of parks and shopping and all measures of cuteness.

Toomer now realizes playoffs are special moment

He had a lot of attitude and not enough game preparation for a second-year player. All that did was land him on the Giants bench for their 1997 postseason showing.

These days, the 33-year-old Toomer has given up on acting his NFL age. He's playing with far too much elusiveness and breakaway speed for a 12th-year elder coming off major knee surgery.

That has him playing a lead role in his team's current joyride to Sunday's NFC Championship Game, where they will play the Packers at Lambeau Field.

"I guess when I was younger, I didn't really appreciate what was going on," Toomer said. "The finality of the playoffs is something that you don't really understand as a young player.

"Once you lose a couple playoff games, you're like, 'Oh, wow, this is serious.' "

Toomer got his first taste of postseason disappointment at, of all places, De La Salle High in Concord.
