The fragile superpower
The US Federal Reserve has cut the federal fund rate by 75 basis points to 3.5 per cent, the biggest cut in 25 years, while President GeorgeW. Bush has combined with the US Congress to approve an urgent $150 billion package to boost spending and combat the loss of consumer confidence. Consider the dismal story of the Bush presidency. After the 9/11 attack, the folly of the Iraq war, the tribulations of the so-called war on terrorism, the reliance upon China's savings and its choice of high budget and current account deficits, the US now confronts the certainty of an economic downturn and the uncertainty about its depth and duration. The unmistakable message concerns American fragility. This fragility, exposed in Iraq, now centres upon its domestic economy. In a visceral yet multifaced way it feeds into a new political mood on display in the early primaries - that the US is heading in the wrong direction and needs an injection of fresh leadership, inspiration and ideas.

It is a foolish tautalogy with no actual meaning.It is so sad that we condemn perfectly normal, healthy, sane and stable people for no good reason simply because some small minded person somewhere in the past got it in their head that their particular all powerful, mysterious, magical deity is a bigot too. There is nothing wrong with being gay, straight or bi, my friend.I wish people who think like you could see how you're perceptions and beliefs are no different than those outlandish, ridiculous beliefs of racist people in the south 50 years ago.That is a most cogent observation Cogent Observer. You weren't kidding when you chose the moniker "Cogent Observer". Cogent Observer is correct. We should be celebrating homosexuality, not condemning it. I mean, where would this country be if we didn't have homosexuals in it? Who cares if they canât produce offspring on their own? I for one will not tolerate intolerance!!! America wouldn't be America if it didn't have morally sound behaviors, like homosexuality, to nurture.
Sound Advice: Pentax K20D to supplant less expensive K10D camera
Q: I have been pretty happy with my Olympus E-10. The price was right and my old Pentax cameras were starting to really show their age (my favorite one is well over 40 years old.) Now it seems that my Olympus is developing problems, and the company says it can no longer repair it. I have read that Pentax digital SLRs would work with any Pentax lens, which intrigued me as I have about eight different screw mount lenses I would love to be able to use again. I'm tempted by the newer models for the speed, as my E-10 is just not up to catching action shots. Would you recommend I buy a Pentax K10D and a screw mount lens adapter? Or would I be better off just buying a kit with two new lenses and giving my old equipment to a museum?

Write a tough story about Apple and the Macolytes will attack. We learned as much from our November issue, in which we dinged the ROKR handset from Apple, Motorola, and Cingular. "Apple doesn't call this the phone of the future," ranted one loyalist. "Blaming Apple for this crappy phone is just pedestrian Apple bashing at its worst." Hey, when Steve Jobs trots out something on a giant videoscreen, it's fair game. Other grumps took issue with a quote we attributed to Mark Twain: "Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it." Wrote one aspiring fact-checker, "This remark was actually made by his neighbor and good friend Charles Dudley Warner." Actually, Warner did say it, but it's believed he was merely quoting his pal Twain. Now, about that cold winter he spent one summer in San Francisco … .
