MICHAEL VEENSTRA'S 60-berth marina at Goolwa has room for only 30 boats: half the moorings are now on dry land. Over the past 18 months, the water level has dropped and its salt content has risen. Goolwa faces the mouth of the Murray River. Yet drought, climate change and more than 100 years of irrigation have left the Murray in one of its worst crises. The Murray and its main tributary, the Darling, are Australia's longest river-system and the lifeblood of its crop farms. It supplies four of the country's six states. The picture at the Murray's source, 2,500km (1,550 miles) east of Goolwa, is more refreshing, as it bubbles out of a clear spring in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales (NSW). But it grows steadily worse from there. In the past two years, the volume of water flowing into the Murray from the rivers that feed it in NSW and Queensland was the lowest since records began in 1892.

After Bearing Failure, Birmingham Bridge To Partially Reopen
The Birmingham Bridge was opened to traffic in 1976 and carries about 23,000 vehicles per day over the Monongahela River, connecting Oakland with the South Side. Signs have been posted to guide motorists around the closed structure. The suggested detour is: Outbound From Fifth Avenue take Moultrie Street to Forbes Avenue. Make right onto Brady Street. From Brady Street, make right onto Second Avenue. Continue on Second Avenue to the 10th Street Bridge. Take 10th Street Bridge to East Carson Street. Inbound Follow same detour in opposite direction. The 24-year-old Back To Black singer seemed in hot water herself after being dramatically arrested last month and having her DNA and fingerprints taken. She was quizzed over a suspected plot to bribe barman James King, allegedly beaten up by Fielder-Civil in an east London pub in June 2006. Cops held Amy on suspicion of offering 200,000 to King to drop his statement against Blake, 25, who has been charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. But DNA tests have FAILED to provide any conclusive evidence to link her to the plot. Cops have probed computer software in Amy's flat to see if she was involved in trying to set up a place in Spain for King to lie low until the case collapsed. They have looked closely at where money allegedly offered to King came from but even if they source it back to Amy's bank account it is believed this will not be enough to charge her.
