Simmermon: Photos lack purpose

What was once used to preserve a memory or leave a legacy to pass down through generations has now turned into an egocentric, self-absorbed facefest.

The idea of picture taking has made many unique transformations since the first cameras were invented.

Killer of Adrienne Shelly Pleads Guilty

Diego Pillco, an illegal immigrant from Ecuador who was arrested days after Shelly's body was discovered in her Greenwich Village apartment, admitted in a New York courtroom on Thursday that he killed Shelly while trying to rob her. He then hanged her in an attempt make her death appear like a suicide, the Associated Press reports. Pillco said Shelly caught him stealing money from her purse and threatened to call police. He is to be sentenced on March 6, and will receive 25 years in prison, says AP. Shelly, 40, was born Adrienne Levine in Queens, N.Y., and raised on Long Island. At the time of her death, she and her husband, Andy Ostroy, had a 3-year-old daughter, Sophie. Shelly had worked steadily acting in film, theater and television, but later turned to writing and directing and made her feature-film directorial debut with 1997's Sudden Manhattan.

Ladies and Gentlemen," President George W. Bush declared Monday night, "some may deny the surge is working, but among terrorists there is no doubt." Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY), The Hill reported, rose in applause.

Bushs speech was one of the more restrained descriptions of the surgelast years decision to send an additional 30,000 troops to Iraq. In recent weeks, politicians and commentators have moved beyond saying the surge is working to the blunter declaration that the surge "worked," full-stop. Bill Kristol, declaring Gen. David Petraeus his Man of the Year, wrote in a Weekly Standard editorial, "We are now winning the war. " In his New York Times column, Kristol challenged the Democratic candidates to "say the surge worked." On Jan. 10, the first anniversary of the surge, the GOP presidential front-runner, Sen.

Since all modern digital cameras require a memory card for storing photos, memory card manufacturers are also tightly connected to the digital photo industry and thus to PMA2008. So, its actually no wonder that some of the respective companies, including here the people over at Kingston, used this opportunity in order to roll out several new products. .

Hot chocolate rapist in court

In the first set of charges he faces, Barkas is accused of drugging women to "date rape" them.

In the second brief of evidence, which has led to his notorious nickname, he is alleged to have bought the women a hot chocolate spiked with a disabling drug.

His lawyer, Theo Magazis, told Melbourne Magistrates Court this morning that the case should be adjourned until next month so that both sets of police briefs can be dealt with at the same time.

Magistrate Felicity Broughton remanded Barkas in custody until January 25 and noted that he did not apply for bail. Barkas, of South Yarra, was arrested in August and charged with attacking 24 women between 1990 and 2005.

In October, he was charged with attacking a further six women after police applied to take DNA from him to check against that found on a dress and bed sheets provided by two new alleged victims.

Although Labour officials were last night stressing Tony McElroy had been planning his departure for a while, the timing could hardly be worse for the party's leader.

And the lure of such development is understandable from the potential of enormous wind energy production. However technical viability and economic practicality lay somewhere in the future. The question is how far in the future? And what must be done to get there? And must we wait?

Future deepwater windfarms in over 60 feet of water or so will require much more expensive multi-leg structures or floating platforms for depths up to several hundred feet. This technology is being explored by energy companies with experience in offshore oil and gas platforms. Currently such construction is possible but its economic viability and operational performance is far from reality.

For example, the first deepwater demonstration project now in the permitting stage is undertaken by Talisman Energy, an oil and gas producer in the North Sea.
