| Dozens Sought in Mob Raids in US, Italy
The operation, code-named "Old Bridge," was centered on New York and the Sicilian capital of Palermo, targeting Mafia figures who were strengthening contacts between mob groups in Italy and the United States. A federal grand jury in New York also accused 62 people of ties to the Gambino crime family and offenses including murders, drug trafficking, robberies, extortion, and other crimes dating back to the 1970s. "Today we are able to bring closure to crimes from the past," U.S. Attorney Benton Campbell said in Brooklyn. "Today we seek justice for those men and their families and we make clear that those crimes and those victims are not forgotten." The sprawling indictment covers gangland killings from the days when the crime family was run by Paul Castellano, who was assassinated in 1985.

I thought the Spokane County Fair was an exercise in hickiness. But the North Idaho fair was rubeoriffic. The beer garden was ok. The little kids racing 65cc motocross bikes weren't bad, especially when they had nasty wrecks. As long as you stick with reputable brands and retailers, you shouldn't have any problem with cables of standard length. A far more common problem is simply trying to use a cable that is too long. Every cable standard has a recommended maximum length. Cables that exceed these lengths require the use of a signal repeater. DVI cables, for example, can make it roughly 30 ft. unassisted, while, in our experience, HDMI can work at up to 50 ft. (There is no technical maximum length for HDMI.) It's easy to know if a digital cable is too long: You won't get an image. The picture may cut in and out, but the sound or video quality won't degrade. It's either transmitting signal or it's not.

The Olympus Stylus 770 SW is rugged and reasonably good looking. And that's pretty much where the praise runs out. The 7.1-megapixel camera is designed for rough outdoor use, with a sealed housing that's shockproof, freeze-proof, and crush-proof, and waterproof to depths of 33 feet to boot. It even has a manometer, which records the depth or altitude at which a photo was shot. The waterproof part is no gimmick, as the camera shrugged off repeated dunkings in salt water on a couple of kayak expeditions. If we had the time to go to Alaska, it no doubt also would have laughed at repeated drops onto the frozen tundra. Downsides? In Macworld jury tests, the camera did receive Good ratings across the board, but many shots came out soft and overexposed, and there's little room to override the camera's decisions.
