Football recruiting

Chase Vasser had eight recruiting visits set up.

He cancelled them all Monday night.

The first junior offered by Georgia has committed to Georgia. Vasser, of Chestatee High School, was the third 2009 prospect to commit to Georgia on Monday. Earlier Emanuel County Institute running back Washaun Ealey and Dexter Moody made public their commitments to Georgia.

Vasser waited until later Monday night to make his call to Georgia.

"I didn't want anybody to take my spot," Vasser said.

To that end, Vasser had a deal with Georgia: He wanted to know the second any other linebacker committed to the Bulldogs. He knew Georgia was going to take only two linebackers in the class of 2009, and he wanted to make sure he was one of those two.

Electronics show offers lots of tech to make users drool

If it was bigger, faster, easier, smaller, wireless, cheaper or "green" it was on display at the 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show. I didn't see everything, but I saw enough to know that I don't want CES to leave Las Vegas. Ever. There were gutter-cleaning robots and booth after booth of sleek, sexy phones and wireless accessories. Much of the hype went to a massive 150-inch television (that's 12 1/2 feet diagonally) from Matsushita, but the top gadget award went to a tiny memory card that automatically sends your pictures to a computer or photo sharing site. The Eye-Fi card (www.eye.fi) looks like a standard 2 gigabyte SD memory card, but it's also a mini Wi-Fi card that connects your camera to a wireless network via a computer running the Wi-Fi Manager software. The price is $99.99 and it's available at many retailers.

South China Villagers Slam Pollution From Rare Earth Mine

HONG KONG—Villagers in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong are battling an illegal rare earth mine in their neighborhood which they say has poisoned the local water supply and wiped out their fish-farm stock and rice crops.

Around 600 residents of Shangmankeng village, near Heyuan city in the northeastern part of the province, have had their lives devastated by severe pollution from the mine, according to one campaigner, identified only by his surname, Li.

“Local officials, corporations, and triads [Chinese criminal organizations] are all in cahoots on this, otherwise this project would never have gotten off the ground," Li told RFA's Cantonese service.

'We can't work'

“The rice crop that was already sown has totally failed. We can't work.

The advanced FinePix S100FS (Film Simulation) digital camera provides an all-in-one solution with manual controls and functionality of a Digital-SLR, including both digital and manual stabilization through a mechanically stabilized "floating" lens element to reduce blur from the photographer's hand-shake, with Fujifilm's Picture Stabilization Technology, to reduce blur caused by subject movement.

The S100FS also features a 14.3x Fujinon manual zoom lens, an 8th generation Super CCD sensor with 11MP of resolution, a 2.5" tiltable LCD and ISO speeds up to ISO 6400 at 6MP and up to ISO 10,000 at 3MP. Bolstered by Fuji's Face Detection 2.0 Technology with Automatic Red Eye Removal, the camera's lens design can achieve maximum resolution at all focal lengths of 28mm-400mm equivalent and all aperture stop settings, according to the company.
