If you can't visit relatives as often as you'd like, or you've got a kid away at school, you might want to get a Web cam for your computer. The Good Housekeeping Research Institute just tested dozens of Web cams. The institute's technical director John Kupsch says the new breed of computer Web cams deliver video images that are clearer than ever. "Web cams, which really enable you to talk over the Internet and see who you are talking with and allow them to see you, have really come down dramatically in recent years in price, where now you can get some really good units for substantially under a hundred dollars," he said. At the end of the institute's tests, there were three standouts. Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 -- $100 The institute's engineers tested 22 web cams and found that installation has become very easy.
Nursing home violence
No counselling for new residents to help them deal with the grief and loss that accompanies the relocation to a nursing home. It is deplorable that they room troubled seniors with others. Sadly, there comes a point for even the most self sufficient family when they are forced to place a loved one in care. When that time comes they should get care on par or better than what we provide for inmates. For all our seniors have given us, we should be providing decent, sufficient care for their final years. As a society, we owe them!!! For those that think they will have enough money to get great care for themselves, please think on the current state of the medical system. Even with the best plans in place, insufficient staff and lack of beds are having an impact right now on patient care.

The significance of the Grammys
Mattoon native Will Leitch is back in the Midwest after a West Coast swing promoting his new book, “God Save the Fan: How Preening Sportscasters, Athletes Who Speak in the Third Person, and the Occasional Convicted Quarterback Have Taken the Fun Out of Sports (And How We Can Get It Back)." (For more on Leitch, see my story in this morning's edition of the Herald & Review. One important thing to keep in mind when reading is Leitch says almost everything with a self-deprecating sense of humor. He laughs a lot, and as a result, I laugh a lot, too.) While he's got a book that selling well (unless, he says, the people at Harper Collins are lying to him and he can't read them well enough to figure that out yet) and a number of writing gigs, Leitch is happy to continue doing Deadspin, the Gawker Media sports blog that made him one of the most influential sports voices on the Web.

Sony’s Cyber-Shot Dsc-T300 Camera Combines Function With Style
Sony is taking the wraps off a new 10.1-megapixel Cyber-shot DSC-T300 digital camera, featuring a stylish, ultra-compact design and intelligent functionality to help reduce the risk of taking a bad photo. The new model incorporates Sonys new intelligent scene recognition (iSCN), a technology that allows the camera to analyze shooting conditions and automatically select the optimal settings for the best photo results. In iSCN mode, the camera can automatically detect up to five scenes, and choose the best setting for the situation. In advanced iSCN mode, the camera will shoot using the users settings and then will automatically step in and take a second shot with optimized settings. If the camera determines that the users settings are best, then a second photo is not taken.

But the new iMac completed our suite of 14 tasks using Adobe Photoshop CS2 in 24 percent less time than the old 20-inch model—a respectable jump. Quick operations For general operations, the 24-inch iMac's overall responsiveness was excellent. Opening, dragging, and resizing windows was very quick. HD video playback was smooth, and working in Intel-native applications such as Final Cut Pro ( ), Motion ( ), iMovie ( ), and iWeb ( ) was snappy. (You can custom configure a 24-inch model with a 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo processor for an extra $250. Our benchmark chart shows the performance improvements you'll see with this faster chip.) The 24-inch iMac also has an upgraded sound system, with a 24-watt digital amplifier (twice that of the other models) to power the built-in stereo speakers.
