Surge in killings outrages Oakland

A camera mounted at Gallagher's Liquors caught details from an earlier shooting, and the neighbors want more of them, he said.

Janet Patterson, a resident manager at ACORN in West Oakland, said community members are organizing and supporting all sorts of worthy programs in an effort to get young people engaged, but it never seems to be enough. She said it's easy to feel hopeless when she sees the same faces on the street morning and night.

Does she have a solution?

"That's a million-dollar question with no answer," Patterson said. "We had a good opportunity to get the guns back, but this killing is still going on.

"We have all these block parties and picnics to get to know each other, but the people who are armed with all the guns are not the ones participating in the solutions."

Can Hip-Hop Erase The Color Lines?

Queen Latifah once sang U.N.I.T.Y and in this day in age its something we so desperately need. The question I pose is if it is possible that the culture of Hip Hop can erase the color lines and unite the people. Its an interesting topic, something Ive casually thought of before but never really dug deep into. So roll with me as I just express my thoughts, and remember these are just my thoughts people. Can Hip Hop heal the already embedded racial tension that lives in all of us? I think maybe in time if we can teach the younger generation love and break the cycle of hate it can. What better weapon than something that was birthed out of struggle and pain to bring out love and hope. Sadly Ive once said that I felt Hip Hop is an culture of bigotry. I know some think I dont know what Im talking about but really examine it.

Adobe fixes undisclosed vulnerabilities in Reader

Secunia is performing a binary analysis of the old and new versions of Reader to figure out the vulnerabilities. However, that analysis takes one to three days, Kristensen said.

Kristensen said no proof-of-concept code has been seen yet and no attacks have been reported. But people should be especially cautious of PDFs (Portable Document Format), the common file type that Reader opens.

"PDFs are generally highly trusted," Kristensen said. "It's a common format for exchanging information."

Secunia estimates that more than 60 percent of home PC users have the Reader program, based on data from one of its software products that checks to see if programs have up-to-date patches. Corporate use of Reader is less, around 30 percent, since many companies use other business applications that can open PDFs, Kristensen said.

Ingleside man guilty in 2004 stabbing death of neighbor girl

An Ingleside man entered a guilty plea Monday in the stabbing death of a teenage neighbor who confronted him during a botched burglary of her home in 2004.

Adam Christenson, 25, could face up to 60 years in prison for the July 14, 2004, slaying of Elizabeth Willding in the home she shared with her mother and sisters.

Christenson, who was to go on trial Monday, agreed to what is known as an Alford plea, in which he conceded that a judge or jury shown the evidence would probably find him guilty but denied that he killed Willding.

Expo Daily Round-Up: iPod gadgets and other goodies

The sun has set on Macworld Expo 2008, and what a week it was. For me, it started with keynote-pundit stalking, then a day of cameras and printers, then a deep-geek dive into storage stuff, and finally—in this installment—a Friday of fun: speakers, docks, FM tuners, and other iPod gadgetry; and then a top-quality laptop microphone, a tricky lens for my digital SLR, and more.

IT Best Buy Shines Brightly as CompUSA Fades Away

When it comes to the realm of consumer electronics, Best Buy is the reigning retail leader. Best Buy's market dominance was made even clearer with the company's fiscal 2008 Q3 earnings report.

Best Buy reported a 52% increase in its Q3 profits compared to the same period one year ago. In addition, overall quarterly revenue rose 17% from $8.5 billion USD to $9.9 billion USD thanks to 45 new store openings during the quarter. Revenue from Best Buy's online division helped the total with a 65% increase from fiscal 2007 Q3.

Not surprisingly, Best Buy attributed an extra week of after Thanksgiving revenue for its stellar third quarter performance.

Hot items for Best Buy during Q3 included consoles, flat-panel TVs, notebook computers and GPS units. When all was said and done, Best Buy's sales mix for the third quarter was 41%, 28%, 19%, 6% and 6% respectively for Consumer Electronics, Home Office, Entertainment Software, Appliances and Services.

Author Bredenberg explores beating clutter

If you are one of those people who spent January neatly arranging your stuff in see-through plastic boxes and identifying the contents with a Dymo labelmaker, please go do something else. Alphabetize your spices. Clean the grout with a toothbrush. This story is not for you.

This is a story about organizing for the rest of us.

Especially those who are - let's be diplomatic here - "terminally disorganized," says Jeff Bredenberg. "Everybody wants an environment they can feel good about. Nobody sits around their house and says, 'How can I be more disorganized?' The fact is, a lot of people don't try harder because most organizational systems are way too complex."

Riding to the rescue is Bredenberg, 54, author of How to Cheat at Organizing: Quick Clutter-Clobbering Ways to Simplify Your Life (Taunton, $14.95).
