As your blog post suggests, all this leads to a further question; is this sort of ready access to our information mirrored in other Government agencies? After all, in an age of increasing job cuts in the Civil Service, we now know the price that those savings are costing us.

Poisoned dumplings put child in coma

China's exports have come under intense scrutiny in the past year after a number of potentially deadly chemicals were found in goods including toothpaste, toys, pet food and seafood.

China's government launched a four-month campaign last August to improve the quality of Chinese products and restore international confidence in its goods. Officials termed the campaign a success. E-mail to a friend

Opinion: The decline and fall of the Palm empire

Later, the founders of Palm invented the first great smart phone — essentially a Palm Pilot that made phone calls. They were cheap, simple and fun to use.

The genius behind both these inventions was, of course, Jeff Hawkins (pdf format). Together with co-founder Donna Dubinsky, Hawkins launched the companies and invented the devices that transformed — and, for a time, dominated — mobile computing.

The Palm Pilot was great for the same reason iPods, Macs and other Apple products are great. In each case, development was lorded over by a design and usability fascist driven by a powerful vision of the complete user experience.

What went wrong?

The tragic story of Palm's fall from greatness is a history of squandered resources and misplaced effort.

The science of slam

The kind that can make eyes water and merits a replay or three. A scientist would need precise measurements and some serious calculations to determine the force of a hit. A football player has only seconds, and sometimes not even that long. Certainly not enough time to think about the wicked physics equation that will play out once he puts his shoulder into the 200-pound Super Ball of fast-twitch muscles barreling toward him.

"If you're thinking like that, you're going to get run over," linebacker Lofa Tatupu said.

Better to just grit your teeth, unload your best shot and let the variables sort themselves out.

"When it's two people running full speed, you never know how it's going to happen," linebacker Leroy Hill said. "Hopefully you come out on top and him on bottom.

Mobile World Congress--Take That, Apple!

If press conferences from Sony Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung are any indication, it's that Apple's one-size fits all approach to the market with its popular iPhone is doomed to failure. Executives at the major phone makers made absolutely no mention of Apple in their speeches, but they clearly appeared to be moving to address the perceived gap in lovability between their phones and the iPhone. Nokia and Samsung had nearly identical mesages, suggesting that they alone were capable of producing a mobile phone for every lifestyle—including all you old-timers who (shudder) simply want a phone to make calls. On the high end where they currently are competing with Apple for mindshare and marketshare, the phone makers opted mainly for evolutionary updates on existing models. Nokia's new dual-band HSDPA N96, for instance, doubles internal memory to 16GB from the N95, while adding LED lights to the 5 megapixel digital camera for flash and video lighting.

2008 Nissan Navara - Solid Utility Vehicle

Competition is a great leveller in any marketplace. When there is competition, the consumer wins.

Case in point, Ford and its Ranger. The Ford Ranger virtually is a forerunner in the compact truck segment of the market. Ford realised that there was a market waiting for a strong small truck, that could fit in an indoor garage, and that wasn't as unwieldy as the full-size products. The concept fit 'hand in glove' with the market and the rest is history - the Ranger being one of Ford's best-selling formulas ever, with production beginning in 1982, and is only now being phased out; production stops in 2009.

However, a product like this becomes so popular, competing manufacturers have to copy and improve on it if they are to stay afloat. Soon, most major manufacturers had some revision of the formula; Toyota had the Tacoma, Isuzu had the P'up and Nissan had the SE.

Affirmative Action for Men

Kevin, What is wrong with being an “elite." It serves many people well. If you are an “elite" you get to do things without working. For instance, a friend of mine got into law school despite having LSATs under 160 because his parents donated a lot of money. Indeed, I asked a pool of people (randomly selected from outside a coffee shop) who scored under 160, if they would refuse an offer of admission to an “elite" law school if they knew that they were getting in because they were “elite" and none of them said no! Amazing.

Likewise, “elites" run our government, schools, hospitals, and just about everything. Quite well, I might add.

Or, Kevin, are “elites" like “trial lawyers" the new bogeyman that you blame everything on?
