Hot air: Fox's replay man preps for big game

Here's a name to know going into Sunday's Patriots-Giants Super Bowl: Artie Kempner.

Kempner doesn't throw, catch, run, tackle or kick. He won't be in the booth with Joe Buck or Troy Aikman. Still, his impact could rival anyone's at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Kempner, who will be directing his second Super Bowl for Fox, is in charge of replays.

Two feet in bounds? Knee down? Ball across the plane for a touchdown?

It will be up to Kempner to have the replays ready for the game officials and viewers at home.

"My greatest nightmare is not having the definitive angle and finding out someone else does," Kempner said the other day from Phoenix. That angle could show up later courtesy of a sideline cameraman from a local TV station or a newspaper photographer.

ULM expects largest crowd for Grambling

For Grambling fans who visit the ULM campus, the grassy area behind Heard Tennis Stadium across the street from Malone Stadium has been designated as the vistors tailgating spot.

I think it will be a great atmosphere, Staub said. Were looking forward to it.

Hank and Tex in the house

Sure, they could have them in Atlanta, but abundant sunshine, golf and private jets make this quick trip south a pretty attractive option for a meeting space.

Teixeira is signing autographs as I write this, as about half of the fans in attendance at this morning workout scrambled for a place in line next to the dugout as soon as they saw the first baseman emerge.

Anyway, there's no update whatsoever on a possible Teixeira contract extension. Braves aren't talking about it, and neither is agent Scott Boras. And by the way, Teixeira laughed when I asked him about the rumored rift between him and Boras.

"Scott and I have a great relationship," he said. "We talk about once a week."

And one other thing: Teixeira is not building a house in Atlanta.

Amazing Minaturized 'SIDECAR' Drives Webb Telescope's Signal

ScienceDaily (Feb. 23, 2008) — Many technologies have become so advanced that they've been miniaturized to take up less space and weigh less. That's what happened to detector controls and data conversion electronics on the James Webb Space Telescope being built by Northrop Grumman. The electronics will convert analog signals to digital signals and provide better images to Earth.

Electronics show loses pizazz

More than 140,000 people at the Consumer Electronics Show this week made Las Vegas a dusty digital Brigadoon, a town coming to life in a fit of noise, crowds and color.

Yet all the apparent excitement and energy can't hide the increasingly apparent fact that against all expectations, a show that's ostensibly dedicated to all that is dazzling and new in consumer electronics has managed to become rather dull. Not the products but the show -- a victim of the consumer electronics industry's spectacular success.

Quik Pod offers self-portraits, made from within arm's reach

Heather Hill's column on consumer trends, gadgets and useful news appears each Tuesday in The Sun. Her daily online column can be found at www.lowellsun.com under the heading "Heather Help Us."

We've all done it. Rather than ask a stranger to take your photo, you extend your arm as far out in front of you as possible, lean back and smile — and hope you get the appropriate background and faces within the frame.

It can make for a goofy shot. And unless you don't mind pictures that are mostly forehead or double chin, the results are usually rather unflattering. But thanks to a handy new gizmo called Quik Pod, decent self-portraits are within arm's reach.

A classic example of "Why didn't anyone think of this before," Quik Pod is a slim, telescoping device that serves as an extension of your arm, thus putting an end to those too-close closeups.
